A petition to the NCAA

Let member schools download their own stats.

We work in athletics communications, analytics, coaching, and administration at NCAA member institutions. We're asking the NCAA to make official statistical data available to every member institution as CSV downloads and through a documented API.

The ask

To the NCAA national office,

Member institutions produce the statistics that make up the official NCAA record: every box score, every play, every season. But when our staff need that data back, for game notes, record books, scouting, player development, compliance reports, or academic research, we usually have to copy it from web pages or re-enter it by hand. This is slow and error-prone, and it puts schools with smaller staffs at a disadvantage.

We respectfully request that the NCAA provide all member institutions with:

The data

  • Season and career statistics: team and individual totals, for all championship sports
  • Game box scores: team and player statistics for every contest
  • Play-by-play: event-level data for each game where it is collected
  • Historical archives: past seasons, not only the current one

The access

  • CSV download: bulk files that open in any spreadsheet or analysis tool
  • API access: a documented, stable, machine-readable interface for automated use
  • For every member institution: credentials available to staff at all Division I, II, and III schools
  • Public access not required: access can be limited to member institutions

This data already exists. Making it downloadable would save every athletics department countless hours, improve the accuracy of what we publish, and give every member the same footing, regardless of budget or staff size.
